Hinduism was not formed from one person or from any one group of people. It has been a collection of beliefs from a number of people groups with similar religious world views that have lived in the area that is now India. Because of the way Hinduism developed, they are extremely accepting of other religions and their beliefs. For example, most Hindus would accept the Jesus of Christianity and Mohammed from Islam as being deities that are equal with their own.
Hinduism believes in one universal spirit: Brahman, which represents itself in many different aspects or avatars. It is these avatars that become the up to 6 million different deities that Hindus can worship. As a Hindu, you are free to choose which deity you pick as yours.
